Stupid Politician Tricks
Ron Orr, UCP MLA
Next on our search for political cannabis comedy, we take a look at someone who sits as the opposition ‘Culture and Tourism Critic’ in Jason Kenney’s Alberta UCP party. Most of us outside of Alberta have never heard of Ron Orr, but after hearing this, you’ve gotta be wondering what the voters in his riding were smoking.
Now anyone who was not in a coma during the 2000’s will remember Jason Kenney as one of Stephen Harper’s most trusted ‘pit bulls’ and is fiercely opposed to cannabis, even for medical use. We’ll get to him later, first let’s meet Ron Orr.
Ron was first elected as a Wildrose Party MLA for the riding of Lacombe-Ponoka and was confirmed as the Culture and tourism critic of new UCP party when the two parties joined.
Mr. Orr would have most likely remained a relatively unknown, his constituents blissfully unaware of the insanity lurking in his head, if he had not let an absolute doozy slip. If you are going to blow your cover and let the world know you are crazy, surely there are better causes than a cannabis phobia.
The tourism critic for Alberta has a vividly wild imagination and he chose to share that with the Alberta legislature. Seems Ron is extremely concerned about cannabis legalization sending Canada down a slippery slope to communism and he wants to warn us all.
“Smoking marijuana has become a fashionable, refined pasttime amongst the young.” said Orr, “the human social cost of this is going to be astronomical, but nobody’s taken a moment to think about that.” Mr. Orr is convinced that cannabis legalization has “a direct historical connection” to the opium trade in 17th century China.
“The opium trade led to a number of serious wars and set the stage for the Cultural Revolution under the communists. That’s a road I’m not really willing to go down”
Wow, that’s some heavy thinking dude. He still hasn’t explained what human social costs he is referring to, how cannabis is in anyway similar to opium or how 2018 Canada has any commonality with 1650 China, but hey, why let facts get in the way of a good theory, eh? He continues:
“Their whole society was so broken down and debilitated by it that it contributed to the Chinese Cultural Revolution under the communists, the execution of thousands of people, dealers were executed, fields were plowed under and planted with real food and I, for one, am not really willing to go down this road. The human tragedy of what’s going to happen with this has yet to be revealed. Yes, opium smoking, like marijuana, was a fashionable refined pastime especially among the young – but I’ll tell you something, it doesn’t lead to the good life. It’s an escape.”
LMFAO…. You just can’t make this stuff up!!
I wonder how drunk he was when he thought that up – certainly a man of questionable mental stability if he was sober. I hope the voters in his riding will make smarter choices the next time they go to the polls or they’ll be hearing warnings about the Colombian coffee growers coming up here to spike our Timmies with cocaine to get us all hooked.
